U.S. President Donald Trump has launched many strikes at alleged drug boats just off the coast off Venezuela Starting on October 3rd and continuing until November 17th sinking 21 boats and killing 83 people.
Trump said in a press conference each boat was suspected of carrying about 25,000 doses of lethal drugs and that “What we’re doing is actually an act of kindness,” referring to saving American lives as he said, “Every boat that we knock out we save 25,000 American lives.”
Starting from October 3rd going until November 17th. Out of the 21 sunk there have been two survivors who were captured and sent back to their home countries, though their identities and affiliations remain undisclosed.
The White House has been releasing very little information on the subject. PolitiFact asked the White House about the proof that the targets were smuggling drugs. The administration did not provide proof. Sources note that the White House has only released limited information.
Legal experts have looked at the situation and say that the airstrikes may violate international maritime law. U.S. officials say the attack was done in international waters, while the president of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro says it was in their territory and dangerously close to their land.
“They’re not coming in by sea anymore, so now we’ll have to start looking about the land because they’ll be forced to go by land,” Trump said to reporters, raising the possibility of a US incursion onto Venezuelan soil.
The U.S. Senate introduced a resolution that said the Senate would have to approve of the use of any future military strikes in the future, but was voted down with 51 Republican senators opposing. With this Trump can continue to authorize strikes without Congresses approval.
As Trump threatens Venezuelan soil and has given the C.I.A. free rein, there has been confirmations of three B-52’s circling the waters next to Venezuela, which were launched from an air base in Louisiana. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has accused the US of “fabricating a new eternal war” and suggesting that the U.S. are “seeking a regime change through military threat.”
Donald Trump said Venezuela “would like to talk” as military inside and surrounding Venezuela grows threatening amounts.
