On Thursday, game developer NetherRealm released the Mortal Kombat 11 (MK11) gameplay trailer, revealing previously unknown details about the characters and features in the much-anticipated gore fest.
Ever since it started in 1992, Mortal Kombat has been one of the best fighting games in the world. It is known for its gory animated fatalities and combos. People had been waiting for another game since the series ever since the release of Mortal Kombat X (MK10).
Ed Boon, the designer of Mortal Kombat, presented the gameplay trailer during the Game Awards. During the announcement, Boon guided the crowd through the new details revealed in the trailer, including options for changing the cosmetics of the characters. Sure we had that in MK10 but this time, you can customize the clothing and weapons of many characters as well as customize the cinematics. There is a huge variety of skins for each character. It’s slightly similar to the personalization system in Injustice 2 (another title from NetherRealm).
They also announced characters that are coming back and one brand new character, Geras, a close friend of Kronika, the time-bending sorceress. Geras uses sand and controls time in combat. The characters that are making a return to Mortal Kombat include Baraka, a fan favourite from Mortal Kombat 2 who is known for his fatalities which are gory even by Mortal Kombat standards. And then there is Sonya Blade (Mortal Kombat 1992) who has a few tricks up her sleeve. She was one of the very first characters in the Mortal Kombat series and also a fan favourite. The last character that is making a surprise return is Skarlet (Mortal Kombat 2011) who uses blood as an unstoppable weapon.
Some of the new mechanics that were added into the game include the “fatal blow” specials which can be retried if missed or blocked. There are also separate offensive and defensive meters for momentum-shifting moves. Mortal Kombat 11 is still keeping its singleplayer storylines alive and hopefully will never abandon them.
NetherRealm has announced that the beta is going to be released on March 28 but unfortunately won’t be available on all platforms. The beta will be available on PS4 and Xbox while Mortal Kombat X will be available April 23 on Nintendo Switch and PC. You can now pre-order it on PS4, Xbox and Steam for $80.00 Cdn. You will be able to play Shao Kahn only if you pre-order the game.
That’s all the information that we got so far from NetherRealm so stay tuned for more information on the upcoming months. Happy fighting for those with a strong stomach!
