We’ve all heard the new viral song “Driver’s License” by Olivia Rodrigo. It’s a heart-filled track describing her getting her driver’s license and how her boyfriend, Joshua Bassett, left her. Now the behind the scenes drama has become very public with a response from Bassett’s current girlfriend, the singer Sabrina Carpenter.
In “Driver’s License” Rodrigo explains how the couple had talked about her driving to his house. Later in the song, she laments, post-breakup: “You’re probably with that blonde girl, who always made me doubt, she’s so much older than me. She’s everything I’m insecure about.” That “blonde-girl” is said to be about Sabrina Carpenter who is now dating Joshua.
On January 22, Sabrina Carpenter dropped “Skin.” Many fans believe this slow, emotional track is directed to Olivia Rodrigo. “Maybe Blonde was the only rhyme,” Carpenter sings. “You can try to get under my skin, while he’s on mine.”
Skin pulls you in and places you in Sabrina’s position, her boyfriend’s ex writing a song for him and putting her into this mess.
“You’re putting me in the spotlight,” she sings. “But I’ve been under it all my life.”
Having relationship drama burst onto the public scene, naturally, Carpenter must come back with the same energy. Her song is catchy and full of feeling.
“You been telling your side,” Carpenter sings. “So I’ll be telling mine.”
