When I first saw that announcement trailer for Far Cry 6, I knew this was a game I couldn’t miss out on.
This sixth instalment checks all the boxes of a Far Cry game, from the unique gunplay to the infinite amount of fun to be had in the open world. With some brand-new features, this is definitely in the top three games of the series so far.
Far Cry 6 follows the story of Dani Rojas, a military dropout who has one goal: to take down the corrupt president of the fictional island Yara, Anton Castillo.
When you wake up on Isla Santuario (the first of two Islands in the game), the first thing you will notice is the games beautiful graphics. It’s easy to tell how much effort was put into this game in general, but one of its best qualities is its graphics, which are smooth and highly detailed – down the pores on a character’s face. The most beautiful part of the game has to be the bright environment. Something I highly recommend you do early in the game is climb up a big mountain and enjoy the beautiful view.
But not everything is smooth in Far Cry 6. The NPCs for example, are a little bumpy, so to speak. Sometimes they will act up so much that while you’re just passing by on a trail or road, a civilian and a trooper will just be having random a shootout for no reason. I can’t count how many times I’ve been run over by a car because the AI was focused on something else and didn’t think I was Infront of an NPC.
The best part of the game definitely has to be the vehicles. From cars to helicopters, there’s so much fun to have that has already led to lots of funny moments. Sometimes when I’m bored, I’ll just drive around running over enemies with a truck (a surprisingly good way to get back ammo), and the vehicles are very easy to drive.
One of the standout features is the workbench, which gives the player many possibilities to customize their arsenal. It allows you to make cosmetic changes like skins but also make functional upgrades like helmet piercing and suppressers. The workbench also lets you select and make your own “Supremos.” These are weapons that charge based on the number of enemies you kill. Your first supremo is a pack of bottled rockets that heat seek any enemies nearby. You’re given this at the beginning of the game, but I’ve found they’re good enough to last you until the end.
A new feature in the game is Amigos, which are “pets” that will join you in combat and help you get out of the fight unharmed. There are a total of seven amigos to unlock in the game’s campaign. The first amigo you meet is Guapo the crocodile, when Juan Cortez claims, “He likes you!”
Far Cry 6 offers a huge map with a total of five unique areas to explore (not including the beginning island, which is more of a tutorial). Each area has a different recommended rank difficulty, the highest rank being 16. You can rank up by completing side missions, campaign missions or even just wandering around interacting with stuff. If you’re looking for a specific item, I highly recommend looking at the Far Cry 6 interactive map. It’s especially good if you’re looking to 100% the game.
The main campaign is very fun; however, it does get a bit repetitive after a while. Each area of the map has its own boss as well as a major ally whose main goal is to take down the boss character of that area. The missions leading up to the boss’ are usually very similar: you find an enemy base, and either sneak around stealth-killing all the guards or just run in guns blazing. Then after the base is clear you get what you came for. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not boring, it just feels like you’re doing the same thing over and over again.
Overall, I would say that this is the most fun I’ve had playing a game in a long time. The story is more on the “meh” side, but the gameplay is an absolute blast. Every time I play, I have to comment to myself on how good it is. I highly recommend it to people who are thinking about getting it or are looking for a new game to play.
