In the 2018 NFL Season, one of the biggest stories has been the amazing performances of Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback, Patrick Mahomes. He has broken many NFL records in his first 13 games played. He has helped the Chiefs bring their record to 10-2 this season and Mahomes has been a huge factor. They are in the top 3 teams this season as their explosive offence tears up the NFL.
Patrick’s astounding performances aren’t new. As a high school quarterback early in his career Patrick threw 50 touchdowns in his senior football season. He attended Texas Tech University starting as a backup quarterback for Davis Webb. When Webb got hurt, Patrick had his first chance. He had a pretty good game and it was announced that he was the starter for the rest of the season.
He also was playing baseball at the time and could have played in the Major League. He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 37th round but he decided to announce for the NFL draft instead.
During the NFL Combine, where draft prospects go to show their skills, Mahomes was throwing balls at 60 MPH tying NFL combine records. He was drafted 10th overall to the Kansas City Chiefs and was the backup quarterback for Alex Smith.
The Chiefs wanted him to learn from Smith and then overtime they would make Mahomes the starter. His first opportunity to play was in Week 17 of the 2017 season when he threw for 285 yards.
During the offseason, starting Quarterback Alex Smith was traded to the Washington Redskins so it was Mahomes chance to be the starter and take over the offence. In his first start of the 2018 season, he put up 256 passing yards and 4 touchdowns. Then, his second game as a starter he put up 326 passing yards and threw 6 touchdown passes against the Los Angeles Chargers. It was an incredible performance, and if he would have thrown 1 more touchdown, he would have tied the record for most touchdown passes thrown in a game.
Throughout 11 weeks, Patrick has thrown for 3,923 yards and 41 touchdowns, leading the NFL for both categories. He is in the lead for the MVP award alongside Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley. It will be a tight race because Todd Gurley is having an explosive season and is on track to break the most rushing touchdowns in a season record which is 28 touchdowns (Todd has 19). On Monday Night Football against the Los Angeles Rams, Mahomes went crazy for 478 passing yards and 6 touchdown passes, which was his best performance this season, though they still narrowly lost to the Rams, 54-51.
Patrick is breaking loads of team and personal records which include most touchdowns passes in 2 games (10), most passing yards (3,042) and most touchdown passes in his first 10 career games (28) since 1950. Patrick has the more passing yards throughout 6 weeks (1,865) than any other Chiefs Quarterback in history, the most consecutive games with 300 passing yards in Chiefs history (8), and he has broke most touchdowns passes in a season in Chiefs history (previously the record was 30 touchdown passes in a season.)
An issue the Chiefs have that is out of Mahomes’s control is the defence. They haven’t been doing great–in fact, their defense is one of the worst in the league. But over time, if they improve it, they have lots of potential to win many Super Bowls and break a lot of records.
As of November 31th, star running back Kareem Hunt was released due to lying about an altercation with a young woman in his hotel after video showed him pushing her to the ground and kicking her. Moving forward without Hunt will make it harder for the Chiefs as he was a huge factor to their success and now Mahomes and the offence have to work even harder.
The 2018-2019 NFL season has been a great one so far–many records have been broken, and there are a lot of teams fighting for playoffs spots–so it makes it even more entertaining and interesting to watch. Patrick will hopefully continue to shatter records and have one of the best seasons that there ever has been.
