In the past 70 years, China has undergone continuous development and progress. Xi Jinping became what is informally known as the “supreme” or “paramount” leader of the People’s Republic of China in 2012 when he became General Secretary of the Communist Party, President of the People’s Republic, and Chairman of the Central Military commission, unifying the top three leadership posts in the country. Under his leadership, during which he has focused on developing green industries, rectifying corruption, and developing the economy, China has maintained an incredible rate of economic growth.
According to Xi’s perspective of socialism, he tries to implement China’s new policies which improve the socialist rule of law, cultivate high-quality professional military personnel, and strengthen the mainland’s relationship with the special region of Hong Kong.
In 2019, Xi said, “There is no force that can shake the foundation of this great nation.” The word “force” can be used in many different contexts, including the opposition from Hong Kong protesters and trade war with the US. However, Xi is trying to improve the quality of life for Chinese citizens through better living conditions, better economic issues, strengthening the unity of China, developing green industries and green homes and alleviating poverty, and political changes, and those are trying to change China into a great country that is prosperous, powerful, democratic, culturally advanced, harmonious, and beautiful, realizing socialist spiritual civilization.
China celebrated the 70th Anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic on October 1st 2019. The theme of the celebration was “opening up and developing a socialist road with Chinese characteristics and building a socialist modern country.” It promoted and displayed the thoughts of various of China’s leaders, past and present, such as Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping, and Xi himself.
After becoming the fifth “supreme leader” of the People’s Republic of China, he did away with term limits, which means Xi can theoretically rule for as long as he wants.
Because Xi is from a small village which is located in Liangjiahe, he is portrayed as knowing about how regular people live in the “real” world. In other words, part of his public image is that he understands the living conditions and needs of most ordinary people in China.
Since China has had strong growth for the past decade or more, China has been slowly catching up to the US economically and is widely expected to surpass it. This however has led to trade tensions between the nations.
Just as worrying are the series of marches and protests in Hong Kong. The demonstrations began as a protest against a bill that would allow people arrested in Hong Kong to be extradited to mainland China, but morphed into a pro-democracy movement that included acts of violence. Xi Jinping pointed out that Hong Kong will always be a part of China and strengthened the military’s protection of ordinary people.
On December 16, Xi Jinping met Hong Kong’s embattled leader Carrie Lam. Xi emphasized that he would continue to firmly support Carrie Lam in leading the government of the Hong Kong special administrative region and firmly support the Hong Kong Police in strict law enforcement, and he also restated his support for the Hong Kong government’s efforts to enforce laws, curb unrest and restore order, safeguarding the home of 7.5 million Hong Kong people.
Xi Jinping has made many great contributions to China’s development: rectifying corruption, creating a new situation for anti-corruption work, making society more orderly and fair; improving the lives of poor people and increasing people’s sense of well-being; strengthening environmental governance, such as curbing water pollution, and adding more green space to the cities; and improving people’s living environment generally.
Xi said, “Our responsibility is to rally and lead the whole party and the Chinese people of all ethnic groups, take up this historic baton and continue working hard for the great renewal of the Chinese nation, so that we will stand rock firm in the family of nations and make fresh and greater contribution to mankind.”
